Switzerland's busy airport is only 4 km or 2.5 miles northwest of the city of Geneva, a popular starting point for winter sports fans. Geneva Airport, or as it's also known, Cointrin Airport after the village it is close to, has 2 runways but handles ca 17 million passengers annually. It's official IATA code is GVA, the ICAO code is LSGG. In fact, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) is based at Geneva Airport.
Geneva Airport is located at an elevated position of 430 meters/1,411 ft above sea level, officially situated at Airport Road 21, 1215 Le Grand-Saconnex (tel +41 (0) 848 192 020). The coordinates are at 46º14'18” N, 006º06'34” E.
GVA is a hub for Swiss International Air Lines and EasyJet Switzerland and offers European, Asia and long-haul flights to the USA from three terminals.
The airport began as an airfield on 11th October 1919 and has just celebrated its 100th anniversary. The first commercial flight happened in 1922, by 1930 there were already 6 airlines flying on 7 different routes. In 1947 Geneva Airport offered the first flight to New York from its runway.
Airlines and Destinations from GVA
Aer Lingus flies to Dublin from Geneva Airport, Aeroflot to Moscow, Air Canada to Monteal and Toronto. Air China, Alitalia, Brussels Airlines, Egypt Air and El Al are just some of the international airlines using GVA. Passengers can fly to Reykjavik via Icelandair from Geneva Airport and to Madrid with Iberia. Luxair offers tourists a link to Luxembourg.

Buses and Trains from GVA
Geneva Airport has its own train station. Trains leave for central Geneva, other Swiss cities and for France. The train station is directly accessible from Arrivals and check-in. It takes only 7 minutes to travel into central Geneva. Tickets for the city center are free, but must be used in the first 80 minutes after collection from machines in Baggage Reclaim at Arrivals. If passengers require travel beyond Geneva, there are direct trains to Bern, Bienne, Fribourg, Lausanne, Lucerne, Montreux, Neuchâtel, Sion, Vevey and Zürich.
Numerous bus lines offer tourists connections to ski resorts in the Les 3 Vallées and there are connections to Val d'Isere, Annecy, Lausanne and Zürich too. City bus lines 5 and 10 connect with central Geneva (bus stops A, F and C).
Regional buses like Flixbus, Alpybus and Ouibus leave from bus stops close to the terminals too. Eurobus Swiss Express runs regularly to Saint-Galle, stoppin on demand at Nyon, Lausanne, Yverdon, Bienne, Soleure, Zürich and Winterthur.

The Main Terminal, or Terminal 1, comprises of 5 piers: A, B, C, D and F. Most restaurants and shopping are located at the Main Terminal. Terminal 2 serves passengers during the winter charter season. Terminal 3 is the Business Aviation Terminal in the south-west of Geneva Airport, where private charter jets offer business travelers connections to other European destinations. Facilities include private immigration, VIP Lounges and customs screening as well as parking.
